In his short tell-some essay, Smith talks about meeting Piper, their struggles with her incarceration on both sides of the bars, and building a life after Piper's release. Smith uses his short platform to offer up some of his own backstory about meeting Piper and correcting some of the views presented in the show and Piper's own memoirs. Smith is, of course, the real-life Larry Bloom from the show and offers his own perspective on the phenomena that is burning up the Netflix airwaves. Having recently finished Season 2 of Orange is the New Black, I thought it poignant to tackle the short audio-bio of one Larry Smith. In fact correcting the mis-perceptions of Larry and that Larry Smith is not Larry Bloom seems to be the whole point of the book. It did serve to remind me that the series is not what really happened, in fact the couple says that only the first episode (up to the point that she self surrenders) is true to life and only some of the characters are based on people she actually met in prison, the more fantastic and dramatic characters are from the brilliant minds of Jenji Kohan and the other screenwriters. It was interesting to hear Larry's point of view but I'm glad it was short because frankly his perspective was not that interesting and I learned nothing significant that wasn't already discussed in Piper's own memoir.
Further into the book is an interview with the couple and you'll hear Piper's voice too. I would recommend the audio book so you'll hear the story in Larry's voice (which is a fine voice really and sounds a lot like the actor's voice in the series). In fact he's a whole lot more like-able, successful and still married to the real Piper (Kerman not Chapman). Larry Smith is NOT the Larry Bloom of the TV series.
